Three new sugarcane varieties to be introduced

In order to boost the cane production, three new varieties of sugarcane will be introduced. In fact the research conducted by the Mauritius Cane Industry Authority (MCIA) has been conclusive.

These three varieties will help to reverse the downward curve of sugar production and are more productive in terms of sugar yields. The new varieties are M 1561/01, M 216/02 and M 1698/02. Their launching was approved by the Cane Release Committee.

Moreover the new varieties are more suitable for wetlands and more resistant to diseases in those areas. In the wake, the MCIA is for a policy of replanting abandoned fields in order to increase national production.
